A château nobody ever altered
Cheverny was built in one go in the seventeenth century and nothing has been changed since. Same family, same furniture, six centuries of continuity on the site. The interiors are among the best preserved in the Loire, and you feel the difference in the entrance hall: nothing here has been reconstituted.
Hergé took it as the model for Marlinspike Hall, removing the two outer wings. There is a Tintin exhibition on site, which settles the question of whether the children will follow.
A day in the Sologne
Cheverny pairs naturally with Chambord , fifteen kilometres away, and with Beauregard. From here, one day is enough for two without rushing.

51 minutes on the way back
Often at dusk. Arriving and parking in our courtyard rather than circling medieval streets is the kind of thing that counts at that moment.
And the bar is still open: 9 wines by the glass, including a Cheverny from Domaine du Vardet. Drinking on the spot what you looked at during the day is one way to end it.
Le Comptoir de l'Écu, open until 10.30pm.
Opening times and admission prices change every season: see the official site of the Domaine de Cheverny.
