The château you walk through from cellar to attic

Most Loire châteaux are viewed from a respectful distance, a cord stretched in front of the furniture. Meung is walked through entirely: the attics, the kitchens, the underground passages, the dungeons.

It was the residence of the bishops of Orléans for centuries, which explains the contrast between the drawing rooms upstairs and what lies beneath. François Villon was imprisoned here, in an oubliette down which prisoners were lowered on a rope. He came out in the summer of 1461, when Louis XI passed through the town.

The town itself is worth the walk: the arms of the Loire, the wash-houses, the collegiate church.

Why sleep in Beaugency

11 km separate the two towns, with no toll and no trunk road. Beaugency offers more restaurants and a railway station while remaining a small town. You see Meung in the morning and you are back for lunch.
